Many years ago when I was around 25 I gave the Capt thing a shot but did not follow through. I bought a self help kinda deal to study and prepare me for the real deal. I made it most of the way through it but then work got in the way and I gave up on my 6 pack. I had a couple friends go to Sea school and got theirs and they said they made it allot easier. Is this what some of you guys done?

Some day maybe as I get older I may do fishing, shrimping and sight seeing trips as a part time guide service along with Pritchetts Custom Tackle and supply ( big dreams) . Kind of a small far off dream of mine. I use to make custom rods for about 10 years and want to get back into this allso. If I got to work when I get over 55 I want to make money doing what I love, not making cremators like I have been doing for last 23 yrs.

My question is ruffly how much do I need to invest to get through a program and get my Capt licence. I want the licence for only inshore or near shore...

Sounds like somebody is jaded about the License process. Capt.Lee and myself (50 Ton masters, MROP, and Commercial towing endorsed) EARNED our License through a lot of money and hard work. I don't know who this guy trained through;but they must have been a joke..... The TWIC alone would have weeded out a drug runner, as they do a 10 yr. background. Sure, a fake ID and SS# might get you through. The OUPV is an open book, but not the Masters....Only book you can have is the CFR (Code of Federal Regulations).
I actually trained mostly with Sea School instead of Adams....
Bottom Line.....Don't think you can write a check, and get a License....I have two nephews who are coasties with 10 yrs.in; and I have still had to respond to questions 3 times from the Commander in Miami.....
Captain Mark Crews

The weather has been on the windy side for the past couple of days. Our
fishing team did get offshore last Friday and had a productive day. We
left the Ponce Inlet Jetty early Friday morning on Offtime, a Grady
White Fisherman powered by a 250 Yamaha F/ST engine. We primarily
bottomfish about 25 miles offshore in the Turtle Mound and East 11 area.
The ocean was like a lake and we had lines in the water within 45
minutes. We caught our usual fare of Triggers, Sea Bass, Sharks, and
also some keeper Lanes, Vermillion, and Mangrove Snappers. We were
continually catching fish all day. Had to release one large Red Snapper
and a Cobia that was just undersized but fun to catch.

Our plans
were to head back in to the Bethune Point near shore to look for some
Cobia however the winds kicked up and we just stayed offshore bottom
fishing. Plus I heard the night before from another Captain that the
Ray's were around on Thursday, but very few Cobia. On our last...
