Captain's Mate Posts: 721 01/27/12 08:49 AM	Tags : None Took my honey out for our first shrimping expedition of the season out of RB. The current and wind were both ripping and it took me 3 attempts to get anchor sets so I could be sideways to the current. It looked like it was going to be a good night for shrimp but it went from a few to nothing and we headed for the dock at 8:30. But when I was pulling up the nose anchor, the rope broke right at the chain and I lost another anchor. In the 2 years I have lived here, I have lost 2 anchors (had to cut one off) and found one. Then I got a bf w/a boat.... and then he left sometime later. Hmmm yup, I lost a little anchor in the process. I think I'm good with just the 2 bigger ones :) The hell with that little one. All of my anchors have that slip ring and a few times I have had to run the opposite direction to break them lose. But the one I lost at the jetty must have slipped down between 2 boulders and nothing I could do would get it lose. I ended up having to cut the rope. The one I lost last night HAD to be my fault. After 50 times fishing and pulling up the anchor, the end of the rope must have become sloppy lose and with the entire weight of the boat against the current and wind, well, it's on the bottom by that channel marker where all the commercial guys fish at RB. Captain's Mate Posts: 1207 01/27/12 02:12 PM - 1 Limits 2012 - 4 Limits 2011	To rig your anchor "breakaway" style, simply attach the end of your chain to the BOTTOM of your anchor, then run the chain up the length of the anchor. At the top of the anchor where the slip ring is, attach the chain to it using a couple strong zip ties. Now you can set your anchor like you normally do. But when the anchor gets stuck, if you pull on it hard enough, the zip ties will break and you'll actually be pulling your anchor out backwards. Bring extra zip ties to re-rig, especially when fishing the jetties........... Google "rigging an anchor breakway style" and you'll get pics and a better description Chuluota born to fish.........forced to work..........

Posts: 533 02/01/12 03:06 PM	I have found many anchors while diving. The slip ring type is one of the commonest to recover. Many are lost to rock and snags. Rig the anchor break away style and buy some # 12 or so hanging twine at a fishing supply house. (may want smaller if a small boat) Make sure the anchor hangs from the chain and not just held beside it. I paint the link that I tie to. When tying use figure eight stop knots on the waste ends and cut them short. You don't want the knot to slip enough that the twine won't break. Frankk

Sea Worthy Posts: 55 02/04/12 09:22 PM	Back home in Ct. we fish rock piles and jetties for blackfish/tautog and you can lose a lot of anchors in the rocks. In bad spots we substitute a throwaway anchor. This is a homemade grappling hook. It is four pieces of 1/4 inch rebar inserted halfway into a pice of 2" diameter thick walled PVC pipe cut to a foot or so of length. At the other end insert a foot long piece of galvanized chain. Fill the pipe with cement. After the cement dries bend the rebar into a hook so you have a grappling hook. For a line you double it up and keep both ends in the boat. If your anchor does not come free it often will come free if you pull it with the motor since the rebar will bend out. But if everything fails just let one end of the line go free and pull your line through the chain and recover your anchor line leaving the throwaway anchor in the rocks. They don't cost much to make. Carry a few spares and you are back in business. To keep your shrimp lights from dragging down tide after you have anchored up you can make the same anchor with smaller pipe and use the longest aluminum gutter nails the same way as the rebar. Nothing rusts and the nails grab to bottom including the cochina rock and your light never slips.

I hooked a large shrimp boat anchor fishing for grouper in the Panhandle. Got it up within sight in 65' of water, but gave out, and let her go back down to Davy Jones' locker. Eat seafood live longer, eat oysters, love longer.

I rig a second line around the grapple with a bouy attached. If it gets hung up i just go back and grab the bouy to back it out. I made mine out of 3/8 rebar also. I do have a couple of stainless grapples that would get me upset if I lost1

I've had a fishing pole 'break away', 2 anchors 'break-away', a camera 'break away', a cell phone 'break away' and numerous bungee cords 'break away'. Last year when I was out cast netting along an island, even the entire boat 'broke away' and I had to swim to get it back. Oh, and did I mention I had one of those hand held GPS's 'break away'? And yet, I keep going fishing. Just part of the adventure I guess. << There Is a Reason >>
