Posts: 3397 02/02/12 06:53 PM - 2 Limits 2012 - 10 Limits 2011	What kind of lights are you using? The battery suggestion can be different depending on the type of light. I am using the LED Greenies and any regular car battery runs 2 all night and only draws it down close to half way. South Daytona I do all of my own shrimping stunts!

Greenhorn Posts: 4 02/02/12 08:05 PM	Thanks for replying. Starfire lights. Using one per battery. Batteries haven't been used in a couple of years and don't seem to want to hold a charge. Water is full. After a couple of recharge/discharge cycles on the bench, they are holding a charge a little better, but nowhere near an evening on the water's length of time. Sea Worthy Posts: 32 02/03/12 06:13 AM	As an electrical Engineer for a major manufacturing company I can tell you that when batteries are not in use, they must be charged at least once a month or the "Sulfur" in the sulfuric acid in the electrolite will leave suspension and attatch itself to the lead plates rendering the batteries usless. I have had the same 3 deep cycle batteries in my boat for my 36volt trolling motor for almost 5 years now and load test them regularly. They are still have about 90% of their original performance due to the fact that I have a 3 bank on board battery charger/conditioner permanenly mounted in the boat which I plug in as soon as I get home after every trip and leave plugged in 24/7. The cost of the charger was about $115. The cost of 3 Deep cycle batteries? Probably $200 or more! So you can see that buying and istalling one would pay for itself. One of the side benefits also is I hardly ever have to add any water to the batteries. As far as what battery to use for what light, look at the "reserve capacity" or "RC" rating on the battery. these are an industry standard and translate into minutes at a 25 amp load. So if you are running say a 5 amp load (1 starfire light) on a battery that has an "RC" rating of 120 (minutes) I should run on a fully charged "good" battery for 600 minutes (10 hours) Using the same formula you could run 5 led lights (approx 1 amp each) for the same 10 hours on the same batttery. So you must know how much your light(s) draw then do the calculations.

Capt's Pet Posts: 211 02/03/12 08:59 AM	Two years ago I made a post on another site about my "experiment' in desulfating marine batteries. This post was made 2 years ago and my useless battery is still working like a charm. I have been using the BatteryMinder ever since and even my 6 year old Walmart deep cycle battery holds up well in a 100 amp load test. Bob _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ (January 2010 post) Yesterday Cdvrmike posted a FYI comment advising that Walmart no longer provides a new battery warantee. I believe I derailed his topic by accident when I mentioned I was having problems charging my starting battery and would have to find another source for new batteries. Sorry, Mike. My topic is merely a report on what I tried yesterday and into today to desulfate my starting battery. As usual, I visited several web sites on the topic and decided to use this method: First, make sure all cells are filled with distilled water. (They should be, anyhow). Second, give the battery a higher voltage, low amp "shot" on an intermittent basis. I used a 20 VDC 10 VA power adapter, leaving it on 30 minutes, off 30 minutes, for three full cycles. This replicated the phased charging used in many of the charger/desulfanator/battery maintainers on the market to break down any sulfar deposits. Third, I had found out that my automatic charger would not work on the battery, giving an error code that means either the battery is sulfated or has a bad cell. Instead, I used my manual 2/10 amp charger set at 10 amps and it began charging at around 6.5 volts. I have found that automatic chargers are not the best to use for revitalizing a battery, using as a power source for removing rust by electrolysis, etc. However, the manual charger always has an output even in extreme cases. Fourth, after about 5 hours on the manual charger, I checked the battery condition using my 100 amp load tester. I got a reading of 14.7 VDC and after the load test still had a reading of 13.5 VDC. Fifth, I hooked up my automatic charger set at 10 amps and it began charging at 5.7 amps. I check this morning and the charger indicated that the battery is fully charged and the voltage is 13.6. Later this morning, I am going to apply another 100 amp load test and then hook up 3 or 4 greenies to see how long the battery power lasts. I did check out the charger (BatteryMinder 12117 recommended by Pete and a few others like the tqcMate Optimate 3+. I like the BatteryMinder but only found Northern Tool as a source. Once I find a better price, this is the unit for me. In the meantime, I have my doubts about the integrity of my present starting battery and will replace it regardless of how it performs in my "greenie" test. I did stop at WalMart last night and looked at replacement batteries. The 24MS (Marine Starting) battery is now $60.00. The auto service center was closed so I could not ask about the warantee situation. Please note that my test was based only on reading Internet articles and might be seriously flawed. Posts: 533 02/03/12 10:07 AM	I fish mostly at night and about 150 or so nights a year. Sleepless is right on with the Battery Minder or Battery Tender. I have two of each and am currently (no pun intended) using 4 AGM (absorbed glass mat) sealed batteries that I bought from Sam's Club. The two separate banks, two in the bow and two in front, operate a side scanner sonar, two trolling motors, various lights including gigging, shrimping, and picking all night long. As soon as my boat is back on the lift I connect them to 4 amp chargers that I mentioned earlier. I use Minn-Kota quick connect plugs for the charger to battery connection. The batteries with a core trade cost me about $100 each and have a 2 year free replacement warranty for that time period. Mine are all fairly new and no older than a 18 mos. The "pulse width technology" of the chargers keeps them charged and prevents or reverses sulphate accumulation on the plates. I used the chargers prior to the purchase of the AGM batteries. I also have several other boats used for different kinds of fishing and will buy more of the AGM batteries when needed. Best regards, Frankk

To get the most charge/discharge cyles out of your battery, keep the max discharge to about 50 percent of rated charge and then recharge with one of the hi tech chargers like the Battery Minder. My personal battery of choice is the UT-12350, sealed AGM battery. this is a 12V 35 Amp hour battery that fits inside of a 5 gal bucke. Weighs 25 pounds, will run two 15 watt lights for a full tide and still have plenty reserve left at the end of the evening.With lights using 20 watts or less power, an inexpesive case size 24 starter battery should work fine for several years.
